X-Men: The Animated Series Season 2 Rewatch!
Date: 16 Mar 2023Source: Comic Book Herald
The X-Men animated series was a roaring success in its first season, skyrocketing Fox to the top of Saturday morning television charts and making the nascent network a serious competitor against ABC, NBC, and CBS in the ratings game. As the second season commenced, writers faced the challenge of maintaining the excitement and high-quality storytelling that made the first season a smash hit, under increased scrutiny from Fox higher-ups. New mandates dictated that the series could no longer be "serialized", and each episode must stand alone. To find middle ground, the writers devised narratives in season two that expanded the world of X-Men by focusing primarily on fleshing out backstories of individual team members. Nearly every member of the team (with a few notable exceptions) received a spotlight episode exploring their life outside Xavier's school. These installments successfully satisfied the bosses without sacrificing the comics-style longform storytelling that set the series apart. Season two managed to plant seeds for larger arcs while progressing the story of Xavier and Magneto trapped in Savage Land in a balanced, creative manner.

Indie Comics Spotlight: Creator Corner: By Water
Date: 16 Mar 2023Source: Comics In Motion
In Comics In Motion, we discover the upcoming release of "By Water: Felix Manz's Story," the first in a three-volume graphic novel series that creatively portrays the historical events of Europe's Reformation. Plough Publishing House brings this compelling tale to life, highlighting radical individuals who stood up for peace, freedom, and conscience amidst a society riddled with turmoil, inequality, and religious coercion. Written by Jason Landsel and featuring artwork by Sankha Banerjee, the series delves into the radical Reformation with a focus on Felix Manz, the first martyr. Landsel describes it as "a timely story of young people standing up to the corrupt political and religious leaders of their day," with Manz, the son of a Catholic priest, becoming "the unlikely leader and ultimately first martyr of the radical Reformation." The trilogy's ambitious and historically accurate narrative depicts the real-life conflicts experienced by Manz and his mentor, the establishment reformer Ulrich Zwingli. Sam Hine, Plough Publishing House editor, praises the series for its ability to "skillfully combine historical figures with imagined scenes and encounters," offering an "action-packed" insight into the radical Reformation period. "By Water: Felix Manz's Story" will be published on March 21, 2023, followed by the subsequent volumes, "Fire" and "Sword."
